Pros

Luxurious interior; loaded with technology; powerful V6; dynamic handling with all-wheel steering

Model Highlights

The 2015 Acura RLX fills a gap in the automaker's lineup left by the departure of the RL luxury sedan in 2012. The RLX is powered by a 3.5L direct-injection aluminum V6 making 310 horsepower and 272 ft-lb of torque, which is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift paddle shifters and Grade Logic Control. With a curb weight of 4,000 pounds, the RLX isn't light, but the powertrain works well to propel the car to 60 mph in under seven seconds.

The RLX features unit body construction and rides on independent double wishbone suspension with lower control arms up front and an independent multi-link with coil springs and a stabilizer bar in the rear. Acura's Agile Handling Assist System provides active braking of individual wheels to assist in cornering, while the crown jewel of the RLX's dynamic handling is Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS). The system enables the rear wheels to adjust toe angles independently of each other, while working in conjunction with Agile Handling Assist and Vehicle Stability Assist. Four-wheel 12-inch disc brakes provide stopping power, while 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels hold road-hugging high-performance all-season tires. Up front, "Jewel Eye" LED headlights provide what Acura claims to be a whiter, brighter beam than either HID or halogen lamps.

Standard equipment in the RLX includes leather seating, front 12-way power seats, a premium 404-watt 10-speaker audio system, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, a multi-view rear camera, Forward Collision Warning system and a Lane Departure Warning. The RLX with Navigation adds navigation with voice recognition, AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic and a color multi-information display. A Krell Audio Package adds a 450-watt 14-speaker Krell sound system, power rear sunshade and rear door sunshades. Finally, the top-of-the-line RLX with Advance Package includes 6-way heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats, as well as a Collision Mitigation Braking System, Lane Keeping Assist System and Adaptive Cruise Control, all of which work to keep the car out of harm's way through a series of alerts, automatically controlled braking and measured following distance.

Model News

The RLX is essentially unchanged for the 2015 model year. A heated steering wheel is now included with the Advance Package.

Value Writeup

Distinguishing oneself among the crowded luxury sedan segment is not easy. The Acura RLX's refinement and capabilities are among the many virtues that let the RLX more than holds its own. A powerful V6 and smooth-shifting transmission provide spirited performance, while Acura's Precision All-Wheel Steer system gives the RLX a sure-footedness not found in other front-wheel-drive cars. With loads of impressive amenities and safety features and a base price under $50,000, the RLX gives buyers a contender to consider against competitors like the BMW 5-Series, Audi A6, Cadillac CTS and Mercedes-Benz E350.

Combined Side Barrier and Pole Ratings:
Front Seat Rating: * * * * * Rear Seat Rating: * * * * *

Overall Rollover Rating: * * * * *
Dynamic Test Result: No Tip
Risk of Rollover: 9.7%

Note Regarding Driver Rating:

Male: Average sized adult male dummy in 35-MPH crash into fixed barrier. Rating is evaluation of injury to head, neck, chest, legs. Female: Small-sized adult female dummy in 35-mph crash into fixed barrier. Rating is evaluation of injury to head, neck, chest, legs.

Rollover Note: Dynamic (moving) test results (Tip or No Tip) and measured rollover-related properties determine vehicle's risk of rollover in single vehicle crash and its rollover rating. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is.

Recall Information

US NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID:
14V792000

Mfg's Report Date:
DEC 15, 2014

Component:
EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS

Potential Number Of Units Affected:
9751

Summary:
American Honda Motor Co. (Honda) is recalling certain model year 2014 Acura RLX vehicles manufactured November 22, 2012, to January 30, 2014, 2015 Acura RLX vehicles manufactured June 4, 2014, to November 18, 2014, and 2014 Acura RLX Hybrid vehicles manufactured November 5, 2013, to July 25, 2014. An aluminum film applied to the inner reflector of the headlight may experience adhesion issues causing the film to delaminate. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, "Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."

Consequence:
Delamination of the aluminum film may diminish output of the headlight, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Remedy:
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace both of the headlights, free of charge. The recall began February 2, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-310-783-2000. Honda's number for this recall is JN2.

Consequence:
If the CMBS unexpectedly applies emergency braking force while driving, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Remedy:
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will update the CMBS software, free of charge. The recall began on July 6, 2015. Owners may contact Acura customer service at 1-800-382-2238. Honda's numbers for this recall is JQ4, JQ5 and JQ6.
