Pros

Fresh styling inside and out; 8-speed automatic transmission; excellent road-holding; superior warranty

Model Highlights

The Genesis comes in three trim levels, all powered by a 24-valve 3.8L direct-injected V6. Combined with either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic, it is capable of an impressive 348 horsepower and 295 lb-feet of torque.

18-inch alloy wheels are standard, as are projector-beam halogen headlights, power mirrors, windows and locks, remote proximity entry, automatic climate control, a leather steering wheel with cruise and audio controls, a CD stereo with SiriusXM satellite radio and Bluetooth hands-free connectivity.

Ultimate Genesis Coupes come with 19-inch wheels, a glass sunroof, HID headlamps, a 10-speaker stereo with navigation and leather seats.

R-Spec models, designed to be track-ready weekend racers, eschew a few standard items such as proximity key and climate control in favor of lightness and simplicity.

All Genesis models feature front, side and side curtain airbags, stability control, traction control, four-wheel anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist, and active front head restraints. The Genesis comes with Hyundai's excellent bumper-to-bumper 5-year/60,000-mile warranty and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, along with 24/7 roadside assistance for five years.

Model News

The Genesis Coupe is largely the same as 2014's redesign, but it no longer offers the 2.0L 4-cylinder engine option, as well as the resulting shuffling of features.

Value Writeup

There is a lot to like about the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Modern styling, a very powerful V6 engine and an available 8-speed transmission make a sporty, but everyday drivable combination. Starting at just under $27,000, the Genesis Coupe presents a package that offers an awful lot of performance for not a lot of money. The R-Spec model adds in sport-tuned suspension and a limited-slip differential turning the Genesis into a potent track-ready racer, with pricing still below $30k.

The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is.

Recall Information

US NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID:
15V756000

Mfg's Report Date:
NOV 15, 2015

Component:
SUSPENSION:REAR

Potential Number Of Units Affected:
10800

Summary:
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Genesis Coupe vehicles manufactured December 28, 2011, to April 6, 2015, equipped with manual transmissions. In the affected vehicles, if the differential and the suspension rear crossmember were not properly aligned during vehicle assembly, the bolts that secure the differential may loosen.

Consequence:
If the rear differential loosens from its mounting position, the driveshaft may disconnect from the differential, resulting in a loss of propulsion and an increased risk of a crash.

Remedy:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will verify the proper assembly of the differential, free of charge. The recall began on December 30, 2015. Owners may contact Hyundai's customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 135.

Dates of Manufacture:

Mfg's Report Date:

Component:
AIR BAGS: OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM - OCS (FRONT PASSENGER)

Potential Number Of Units Affected:
84500

Summary:
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2010-2016 Genesis Coupe vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, to June 11, 2016. The electrical harness connector for the front passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) may dislodge when the seat is moved.

Consequence:
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, the disconnected OCS would, by default, cause the first stage, and only the first stage, of the air bag to deploy, whether there is a child seat in the front seat and the bag should not deploy or if the crash is severe and both stages should deploy. Either scenario increases the risk of injury to the front seat occupant.

Remedy:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will secure the OCS connector to prevent it from disconnecting, free of charge. Parts are not currently available and a second letter will be sent to owners when parts are available. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 151.

Dates of Manufacture:
DEC 11, 2008 to JUN 10, 2016
