Model Highlights

The 2015 Mirage revives a Mitsubishi model name from years past, but that's where any similarities to past cars end. The new front-drive, 5-door sub-compact is minimalism on wheels, with smart, basic transportation in mind.

The Mirage is offered in two trim levels: DE and ES. Both are powered by an all-aluminum 1.2L 3-cylinder engine. It features Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) and produces 74 horsepower and 74 ft-lb of torque. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, but for $1,000 more the Mirage can be ordered with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). When equipped with the CVT, the Mirage offers an impressive fuel economy rating of 37 mpg city and 44 mpg highway. Mitsubishi claims that no other non-hybrid car can top it.

The Mirage rides on 14-inch wheels, which are steel on the DE and alloy on the ES. Braking is courtesy of front ventilated discs and rear drums, and the little car's nimble urban handling is courtesy of MacPherson-type struts in front and a torsion beam in back. At a mere 149 inches long, the Mirage has a turning radius of just over 15 feet, allowing for near-effortless parking lot maneuverability.

The basic Mirage starts at $12,995, making it one of the least expensive new cars available in the US. At this miniscule price, its standard feature list comes off pretty impressively equipped for "basic transportation:" auto-off halogen headlights, power-adjustable mirrors, remote keyless entry, power locks and power windows with driver's side auto up/down, a 4-speaker, 140-watt CD/MP3 audio system with USB port, automatic climate control, 60/40 split-fold rear seat, stability and traction control and seven airbags.

The ES adds Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, keyless entry and push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, steering wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, and halogen fog lights.

The Mirage can be optioned with a Navigation Package, which includes a 7-inch touchscreen display, integrated entertainment features and voice control, along with a wide-angle rearview camera. Even optioned-up, the Mirage still comes in at under $17,000.

Model News

After its introduction last year, the Mitsubishi Mirage receives several updates for 2015. Changes to the interior include additional chrome accents around the center dashboard cluster, as well as nicer seating fabrics on the ES model. ES models also get new side mirrors with built in turn indicators and all models get a new sleeker looking short pole antenna.

Value Writeup

If your idea of basic transportation is a no-frills economy car with five doors, a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty, the best non-hybrid fuel economy on the market, a base price under $13,000, and a fun color palette, then look no further than the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage. With its diminutive size, the Mirage is also quite nimble, allowing for excellent maneuverability in tight spaces. It may not win any drag races, but it will get everywhere it needs to go, and it will save money the whole way.

Rollover Note: Dynamic (moving) test results (Tip or No Tip) and measured rollover-related properties determine vehicle's risk of rollover in single vehicle crash and its rollover rating. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is.

Recall Information

Mfg's Report Date:
DEC 03, 2015

Component:
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING

Potential Number Of Units Affected:
55899

Summary:
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Mitsubishi Mirage vehicles manufactured July 27, 2013, to September 2, 2015. If the driver enters an affected vehicle with their feet covered water and salt, it may soak through the carpet and cause corrosion to a wiring connector located in a junction box behind a kick panel to the left of the driver's footrest.

Consequence:
In the event of a crash, corrosion of the connector could delay deployment of the frontal air bags, increasing the risk of injury to the driver and the front seat passenger.

Remedy:
MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the affected connectors, replacing any found to be corroded. A waterproof sheet will be installed over the connectors to prevent future corrosion. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in February 2016. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-16-001.

Potential Number Of Units Affected:

Summary:
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Mirage vehicles. The internal acceleration sensor in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) can misinterpret vibrations such as those from poor road conditions or a flat tire to be a sensor error thereby disabling the air bags from deploying in a crash.

Consequence:
Air bags that do not deploy as designed in a crash increase the risk of injury.

Remedy:
MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the SRS-ECU software, free of charge. The recall began on November 10, 2017. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-17-006.

Dates of Manufacture:
